Beyond Zero is our vision of what we need to do, and where we need to go, to achieve sustainable, world-class Health, Safety, Security and the Environment (HSSE) performance throughout all our global operations and beyond the work-place, out into the wider community.

As Amec Foster Wheeler embarks on a new Beyond Zero initaitive, it is imperative that we understand one of our most important values: Doing the right thing.

What does this mean to each and every one of us and how do we ensure we live this value all of the time?

The answer is ingrained within our company culture and is made up of group behaviors and beliefs formed over time. HSSE must be in all of our hearts and part of everything we do, not because we say so – but because it is the right thing to do.

Trust and respect are essential in a true HSSE culture. How many of us trust everyone we work with and how many people trust us?

We must encourage communication and conversation - even when those conversations may be difficult. No schedule or production goal is more important than individual safety. Create a team mentality and culture that involves everyone and invites feedback.

In a strong HSSE culture, everyone is accountable for speaking up if they observe a person performing an at-risk behavior. In a Beyond Zero team approach, speaking up when there are HSSE concerns creates a level of trust without being criticized for doing the right thing.

Leaders must insist on personal accountability and lead by example. Always remember, what is important to the boss is what is important to the employee.

Establishing this culture can only be achieved when we all act together to clearly communicate goals and expectations, ensure adequate education and instill measurable objectives. Most importantly, we must give positive feedback when something is done right, A true Beyond Zero culture is realized when we all take responsibility for each other’s safety.

In other words, do the right thing, all the time, no matter what. Even, when no one is watching!
