Amec Foster Wheeler announces today that its Fore River Seep Remediation Project for Unitil Corporation received a 2016 Honor Award through the Engineering Excellence Award programme from American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Maine.

The awards focus on innovative and resourceful aspects of challenging engineering projects in the community.

Amec Foster Wheeler was recognised for its successful remediation of a former manufactured gas plant’s legacy impact to sediments in the Fore River in Portland harbour. Amec Foster Wheeler provided investigation, engineering, and construction management services for remediation of an active coal tar seep (a dense oil-like-material) and associated impacted inter-tidal sediment along the shoreline. The remedy combined a grouted sheet pile wall and bentonite (AquaBlokTM) containment system with sediment excavation.

The team used an innovative remedy to resolve legacy environmental impacts, eliminate costly long-term operations and maintenance, which resulted in a positive impact on the environment. Winning an award for this project is an honour and a testament to our commitment to delivering excellence for our clients and communities.
