Amec Foster Wheeler has been awarded a US$26.6 million order with the U.S. Air Force Civil Engineer Center (AFCEC) to sustain and improve Air Force facilities at Wake Island. The remote three-square-mile U.S. territory located in the western Pacific Ocean is one of the US military’s most historically and strategically important assets, having been the refuelling and replenishment locale for the US Navy and Air Force during World War II.

This is the 50th construction task order under Amec Foster Wheeler’s Sustainment, Rehabilitation and Modernization Task Order Contract (SATOC) with the Air Force.

Amec Foster Wheeler will modernise Wake Island’s electrical distribution system, consisting of approximately eight miles of medium-voltage electrical upgrades and installation of a 750kW ground-mounted photovoltaic system with battery storage.

This is incredibly important work and builds on our long history of successful performance on SATOC. We have worked with the Air Force in some of the most remote, austere, and challenging locations in the world, including Iraq and Afghanistan. Wake Island’s tropical location means we can help the Air Force use solar energy to reduce energy costs and the importation of diesel fuel at this historic airfield. The project strongly aligns with our strategy to increase our engineering, procurement and construction work with the US Department of Defense outside the continental US.

Amec Foster Wheeler announced a contract with the U.S. Air Force Civil Engineer Center (AFCEC) to sustain and improve Air Force and other U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) installations worldwide in March 2017. It also announced a contract with U.S. Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) to clean up and restore Navy properties contaminated with low-level radioactive materials and industrial wastes in April 2017.
