Support services from concept through to end of life
Wood provides a variety of support services to the marine sector, including warships, submarines and commercial vessels such as FPSOs, tankers, cruise liners and ferries, as well as support to ports and shipping authorities, from concept through to operational support and end of life.
Maintenance and fabrication support
Approved by the UK Ministry of Defence and possessing the resources, management capabilities and requisite technical expertise, Wood provides access and containment systems, protective hull and tank coating services, and insulation work for all types of seagoing vessels. We operate in both Royal Navy dockyards and commercial ship yards.
We undertake all of the surface preparation and painting work, leading the way in innovative, value-adding work involving the application and repair of specialist naval stealth systems, including radar-absorbing materials and acoustic cladding materials such as anechoic tiles applied to submarine hulls.
Closed-cycle blasting using automated recovery and ventilation systems, specialist cleaning, trained fire sentries and first attack fire fighting (FAFF) crews can also be employed as part of a single-source solution provided for total vessel in-service, build and re-fit requirements.
We also work in partnership with port authorities to maintain their port and harbour assets such as jetties, cranes and loading ramps.
Planning, design and development of marine terminals
Wood combines advanced analytical capabilities, strong technology knowledge and experience to deliver safe, practical and cost-effective solutions for the development and operation of marine terminal infrastructure.
We provide proven solutions to both operators and engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractors on projects spanning from concept selection to fitness to operate. We leverage broad engineering capabilities to optimise the solution at the early stages of the project, ensuring our customers minimise their engineering and development spend. We have an extensive track record in delivering engineering projects for:
- Single-point mooring (SPM) terminals
- Fixed berths/jetties
- Multibuoy moorings (MBM)/conventional buoy moorings (CBM)
- Floating storage regasification units (FSRU)
- Tank farms
- Pipelines
- Subsea structures
- Engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM)
We bring a number of benefits to your marine terminal projects:
- Impartial and technology-independent solutions
- Network of experts providing a local interface with access to technical authorities across the globe
- An integrated, multidiscipline approach that combines all of our capabilities into a single project team
- Strong analytical capabilities in riser, mooring and berthing design, and flow/surge studies
- Flexible commercial models to deliver a wide range of services under a single contract
- Proven track record on both greenfield and brownfield projects
- Complementary environmental support from development consent through to operational compliance

GIS and dynamic simulation modeling
We provide specialist services at every stage of the project. By using integrated supply chain planning, geographic information systems (GIS) and dynamic simulation modeling, we can select the optimum transportation routes and modes of transport.
We combine these planning skills with multidisciplinary engineering expertise to select, design and construct port and intermodal sites that optimise capacities and handling rates.
Our experience of working in the extreme conditions of the Arctic, developing marine and overland transportation routes for mining projects, and developing terminal facilities in exposed and remote locations internationally all help to make us a flexible, global partner for developers of port and marine infrastructure.
Wood's multidiscipline skills and extensive geographic network of offices provide a unique services offering.
From environmental permitting to weather forecasting
Our in-house resources include environmental services, permitting, coastal engineering, maritime civil and structural and materials engineering, and materials handling design and fabrication.
We also provide specialised marine weather forecasting services, providing operational support to offshore oil companies, major marine contractors and vessel operators.
