Wood has secured  the #1 Top International Design Firm in Engineering News-Record’s 2019 ranking of the world’s 225 leading engineering and construction companies.

The top ranking reflects Wood’s strategy to reposition its business as a broader engineering and construction player extending beyond traditional oilfield services into a range of end markets including energy, industry and the built environment.

Joseph Sczurko, Wood’s executive president of strategy & development, comments: “We are delighted with this achievement which recognises the global technical services platform we’ve created as Wood. The diversity of our business across key end markets and our established local presence in important geographic areas enables Wood to add value to our customers across the full life cycle of their assets globally.”

“Our capabilities range from initial planning, conceptual studies, and permitting, through to engineering design, automation, project management, and operational support solutions.  Our customers value this ability to integrate technical consulting, engineering, capital projects delivery, and operational services expertise.”

Engineering News-Record (ENR) is an influential US-based publication providing engineering and construction news, analysis, commentary and data for more than 100 years. Firms are ranked by ENR based on design revenue from projects out with their home country, measuring their presence and business volume in international markets.

In this year’s ranking, ENR highlights the challenges facing international engineering firms from geopolitical change and resulting economic concerns. Despite this, the market is generally positive, and Wood has embraced new opportunities by focusing on new ways to collaborate with customers, leveraging Wood’s full capabilities and applying new technologies.

Wood is also investing in digital solutions as a catalyst for future growth, enhancing its capabilities and encouraging smart partnerships in line with its strategy.

Joseph continues: “Within engineering projects, there’s potential to unlock a huge amount of value by collaborating more effectively and fully delivering our expertise.   Wood has differentiated and strong technical capabilities across the energy, industry, and built environment end markets. We have an excellent global customer base with long-standing relationships in these markets, as well as new customers attracted to our progressive technical consulting, engineering, and project delivery vision.”

“The dynamics are rapidly changing in our industry - in some areas, our customers can be a competitor, while in other areas we’re already collaborating with them on new solutions and new services. Similarly, equipment vendors may be partners or competitors depending on customer preferences. What’s not in question is that there are exciting opportunities to integrate capabilities to deliver additional value for customers, and customers look to us to help figure out how to deliver work faster and with lower overall life cycle cost.”

“Our digital vision focuses on adding value or creating efficiencies across the entire life cycle of a project. At Wood, technology-enabled delivery covers everything from making our safety management systems available via an app, to in-vehicle monitoring systems, digital twins for construction projects, our automation and robotics capability, artificial intelligence in engineering design, and sophisticated sensors and remote monitoring for offshore weather conditions.”
