Equinor
Integrated brownfield solutions
Campos Basin, Brazil
Highlights
Equinor’s Peregrino field, located in Brazil’s Campos Basin, is home to the company’s largest operated asset outside Norway and is a key contributor to Brazil’s offshore oil production.
Equinor has operated the Peregrino development since 2009, producing around 300 million barrels of oil from three fixed platforms and an FPSO.
Prio, Brazil's largest independent oil and gas company, is set to take full control of the Peregrino oil field following a significant acquisition from Equinor.
Scope
Brownfield engineering, operations and maintenance
In 2009, Wood began supporting Equinor’s Peregrino field with operations and maintenance, ensuring steady and safe oil production.
In 2017, the scope expanded to include wellhead platform design, engineering and construction, essential for sustaining production in the field’s low-energy, heavy oil reservoir. Wood designed Peregrino’s third wellhead platform, Charlie, to enhance output.
In 2019, Wood shifted focus to maintenance and modifications, acting as a single interface for continuous production optimisation and asset reliability through brownfield project scopes.
Evolving to support Equinor's needs
Wood’s scope has evolved over 15 years of continuous delivery, encompassing front-end engineering and design (FEED), detailed engineering and procurement, construction and commissioning, modifications and operations and maintenance.
Local talent, supported by global expertise
This contract is primarily supported by Wood’s multi-faceted team and fabrication capabilities locally in Brazil, supported by engineering experts across Colombia and the US.
Solution
A fully integrated team, aligned to priorities
Wood’s integrated delivery model has been central to the success of the Peregrino contract. A unified project and management team works closely with Equinor to align priorities, optimise resources and maintain production.

- Strengthened long-term reliability of critical infrastructure
- Mobilised 500+ personnel to deliver upgrades with minimal disruption to operations
High Activity Period (HAP) campaign
Led an 18-month campaign covering engineering, procurement, fabrication, installation, commissioning and preservation.
- Delivered 1.5 million hours of onshore and offshore work with no major incidents, ensuring safe and efficient execution
- Maintained production while executing complex scopes, with the largest mobilisation in field history
Maintenance and modifications framework
Acting as a single interface for offshore modifications, supporting Equinor from concept to completion. When Equinor identifies a need - whether to debottleneck production, improve equipment performance or replace components – Wood can take complete ownership of the full scope.
Our integrated approach begins with basic engineering and 3D offshore surveys, followed by detailed design and fabrication in our own facilities. We manage procurement and bulk material supply through our established supply chain, oversee storage and logistics and coordinate delivery to the FPSO or wellhead platforms. Once on site, our teams handle installation, commissioning and preservation, ensuring seamless execution and continuity throughout the modification lifecycle.
- Providing skilled people to support maintenance and modifications from 2009 – 2025
- Supporting continuous production optimisation and asset reliability through brownfield scopes
- Secured multiple contract extensions based on consistent performance and client trust
Keeping people safe
Safety is embedded in every aspect of Wood’s delivery across the Peregrino field. From leadership presence offshore to frontline training and proactive risk management, Wood enables safe execution in one of Brazil’s most demanding offshore environments.
Key safety initiatives include:
- Supervisor training workshops tailored to offshore operations
- Implementation of “Stop Work Authority” and pre-inspection protocols
- Enhanced communication flows and health declarations
- Critical tools checklists and risk awareness briefings
- Intensive proactive presence of Wood’s leadership offshore from both local and global HQs
Wood’s safety-first culture is reflected in the issuance of over 5,000 safety observation cards in a single month, and the achievement of 1.5 million hours of major incident-free work during the HAP campaign.
Overcoming challenges
Operating in a highly corrosive offshore environment, Wood faced significant challenges related to aging infrastructure, strict regulatory compliance and the need to execute modifications without disrupting ongoing production.
The team also navigated a competitive local labour market, requiring strong retention strategies and a robust safety culture to maintain workforce stability.
Wood responded to challenges with measures to ensure continuity of operations and successful delivery across all phases of the contract:
- Flexible offshore rotations and COVID-era safety adaptations
- Strategic deployment of global engineering resources to fill capability gaps
- Close collaboration with Equinor to prioritise scopes and streamline execution
